Couples rarely argue about what they are actually arguing about. The dishes, the phone, and the in-laws are surface topics; beneath them sit a smaller number of recurring root causes that drive conflict across its many disguises. The Muslih Relationship Framework (MRF) is a structured taxonomy of twenty-four root causes of couple conflict, developed as the analytical backbone of the Muslih app and published openly for scrutiny, application, and collaborative validation.

The six tiers

The framework organizes the twenty-four causes into six tiers — layers of origin, not ranks of severity:

• Attachment and Safety — how each partner handles closeness, distance, and threat.
• Core Needs — what each partner requires to feel seen, supported, and whole.
• Values and Worldview — what each partner believes life together should look like.
• Communication Patterns — how conflict is actually conducted between them.
• External Stressors — pressures from outside the relationship that bleed into it.
• History and Trauma — what each partner carries in from the past.

Design commitments

The framework synthesizes established relationship science — attachment theory, basic psychological needs research, and the Gottman research program — and was designed from the outset to be bilingual (English and Arabic) and culturally attentive to Middle Eastern and Gulf contexts, where extended-family involvement, religious observance, and role expectations are first-class dimensions of couple life. It is a working taxonomy, not a diagnostic instrument, and its cultural validation is explicitly framed as open, ongoing work.
